An M1 employee created fake contracts for over 3,000 handsets and earned $2 million from selling them.
A district court heard on Friday that Matthew Yeo Kay Keng stole 3,085 handsets between April 2008 and November 2010, and sold them to third parties.
The account manager would create fake subscription contracts for mobile services supposedly made by corporate customers, The Straits Times reported.
Under these contracts, the customer would have free or subsidised handsets.
He would then intercept these handsets before they were delivered by courier, saying that he would personally deliver them.
Yeo bought Porsche cars, branded watches and bags with the money earned from under-the-table sales.
The 35-year-old also made some investments with the money.
Yeo pleaded guilty to two charges of criminal breach of trust over the 3,027 handsets and seven counts of money-laundering.
23 other charges will be taken into consideration when he is sentenced later this month.

‘Possessed’ boys trick girls into sex
A teenage girl was tricked into performing sex acts on four teenage boys after they pretended to be possessed by gods.
The court heard that the victim, who was 14 at the time of the incident, was told that she would receive divine punishment if she refused to carry out the wishes of her alleged attackers.
She was attacked by the leader of the group, who is a school dropout and cannot be named to protect the girl's identity.
The boy came up with the trick after he saw worshippers at a Chinese temple being 'possessed' and planned to trick the girl in February 2008.
He told her that the "Chinese God of Hell" wanted to have sex with her and would kill her friends if she refused.
It was reported that he suggested to the rest of the group that they convince the girl to do their bidding as punishment after she rejected one of the boys.
The boys are alleged to have tricked her into performing the sex acts after pretending to be possessed.
In a separate incident, the group leader also raped his girlfriend, who was best friends with the other victim.
He carried out the attack in his bedroom in front of the group, after he used joss sticks to burn off a tattoo on an accomplice's finger to show he was possessed.
The group leader then raped her after telling her the Chinese gods would harm her if she refused to do as she was told.
The boy has pleaded guilty to two charges of rape and two of sexual assault, while eight other charges will be taken into consideration when he is sentenced.
While the youngest attacker, who is now 16, is on probation, the other two alleged accomplices have not been dealt with.

Groom abandons fiancée, jumps bail

A man, who is held on remand and granted bail to get married, is now on the run from authorities after he failed to to turn up for his trial in a district court on Tuesday.
Irfan Ahmed Khan, 28, who was awaiting trial for drug trafficking, was granted the one-day bail of S$100,000 in the High Court last Friday. He claimed that he had to go to the Registry of Muslim Marriages on Tuesday morning with his fiancée,
The court heard that Khan, who was remanded at Changi Prison, left the facility with his elder brother at around 2pm on Monday and met his fiancée to buy some clothes for the wedding that afternoon.
However, at around 7pm, Khan entered a mosque in Yishun alone while his fiancée waited outside. But an hour later, he could not be found even after his brother searched the mosque premises.
District Judge John Ng issued a warrant of arrest for Khan and ordered his elder brother to show cause on 6 September why the bail should not be forfeited.

Woman jailed for forging signatures on cheques

A 30-year-old woman has been jailed four years and 11 months for forging her former employer's signature on cheques to embezzle over S$1.3 million, reported Channel NewsAsia.
Samantha Chiam Hwee Theng, a former personal secretary, had committed the offences between February 2006 and February 2009 and pleaded guilty to nine of the 33 charges brought against her.
She had forged the signature of her ex-boss, Wu Chin Wei, 38, before using the money on shopping, vacations and household expenses.
According to her lawyer, Chiam suffered from a condition known as 'shopaholic disorder'. In mitigation, he revealed that she 'readily lost control' in the habit once she started shopping.
She is also said to have spent S$10,000 during her visits to Louis Vuitton and S$30,000 to Chanel on several occasions.
According to a report by Dr Lim Yun Chin, a psychiatrist from Raffles Hospital, Chiam's lawyer said that she had 'often experience guilt for embezzling money to fund her shopping compulsion'.
However, another psychiatrist who assessed Chiam disagreed. Dr Jerome Goh Hern Yee from the Institute of Mental Health stated that her offending was 'motivated more by social needs and her desire for her family's acceptance and respect', said Deputy Public Prosecutor Christopher Ong.
Both psychiatrists agreed that Chiam's offences involved pre-meditation and planning and were not committed on impulse and could not have been caused by her disorders.
Chiam has compensated S$100,000 to her former boss and surrendered goods amounting to S$400,000.

Pianist gets death sentence for murder

Xi'an (China Daily/ANN) - Yao Jiaxin, a university student who stabbed a young mother to death after knocking her down with his car in a traffic crash in October 2010, was sentenced to death on Friday by a court in Xi'an, capital of Northwest China's Shaanxi province.
Yao, 21, a junior at the Xi'an Conservatory of Music, ran into Zhang Miao while she was riding a bicycle. Yao was driving a Chevrolet Cruze at the time of the crash, which occurred at 10:30 pm on Oct 20. Fearing that Zhang would remember his license plate number and report him to the police, he stabbed her to death, according to the Intermediate People's Court of Xi'an.
The court also handed down a life-long revocation of Yao's political rights and ordered Yao to pay 45,498.50 yuan ($6,983) in compensation to Zhang's family.
After the stabbing, Yao drove away from the scene and, in his hurry to get away, injured two bystanders. In an interview with police on Oct 22, he denied he had committed the murder.
The next day, though, he surrendered himself to police in the company of his parents and admitted to being responsible for the killing, the court said.
Yao said he resorted to murder because he feared the "peasant woman would be hard to deal with".
On the night of her death, Zhang, 26, the mother of a 2-year-old boy, was returning home from her temporary job as a cafeteria assistant at the Chang'an campus of Northwest University.
Police said the crash left her with a small fracture in her leg and other slight injuries.
Yao, after hitting the victim, did not try to help her but instead resorted to murder to silence her. That split-second decision made his crime heinous and eliminated a possibility that he would receive a lesser punishment, the court said on Friday.
In China, criminals who turn themselves in are occasionally granted lesser punishments than those who do not.
"The motive was extremely despicable...the conduct was extremely cruel...and the consequences are extremely serious," the court judgment said.
Yao, when asked if he wants to appeal the sentence, said he needs time to make such a decision.
Relatives of Yao and Zhang, as well as hundreds of journalists and students, were present for the judgment.

Six-year-old boys sexually assault girls of same age

Police confirmed they were 'made aware of an alleged incident but are not investigating' because the boys were under 10, the age of criminal responsibility in Britain, according to The Sun.
The boys were still at the school in Lancashire but were chaperoned throughout the day.
Worried parents have threatened to remove their children from the school.
A mother of a student at the unnamed school said: 'These boys are probably too young to realise what they have done. But you don't expect this. It's a horrible thing to happen. One girl's behaviour apparently changed markedly after what happened.'
'We now know that at least five girls were involved and three have left,' another said.

More teen girls in underage sex

SINGAPORE: The number of teenaged girls engaging in underage sex rose last year, even as the authorities scored a success in reducing the number of younger girls from doing so.
The latest police figures show that there were 198 cases of sexual penetration involving a girl aged below 16 last year. This was 10 more than in 2009.
However, the number of cases last year was an improvement from the figures in 2008, which saw 249 cases.
The police said that, most of the time, these girls were having underaged sex with men known to them, usually their boyfriends or friends.
In one such case heard last month, Muhammad Shafiq Abdul Ghani, then 20, pleaded guilty to having consensual sex with a 14-year-old girl between late February and early March, last year.
The court heard the girl had initiated sex as she wanted to "have his child". Muhammad Shafiq agreed.
Now 21, he was fined $4,000 and spared jail. District Judge Eddy Tham felt the girl's "active initiation" where the offender was below 21 was a sentencing consideration. Prosecutors have appealed.
However, statutory rape cases - for girls under 14 -improved. Compared to 2009, last year saw a 40-per-cent drop in the number of cases.
Deputy Superintendent William Goh said police have been delivering talks on teenaged sex and the law to students from secondary schools and junior colleges, as well as training teachers so that they can raise awareness on the issue.
He added: "Since 2009, police have extended such talks to social service networks, with the objective of widening the reach to create a greater awareness of the legal and social consequences of teenage sex."
Mr Yusof Ismail, chief executive of Ain Society, which works with troubled youth, suggested that the authorities could extend these talks to primary school students as he was now seeing children, aged 12 to 14, becoming sexually active.
He said: "If we want to bring numbers down over the next five years, we should consider extending efforts upstream."
Clinical psychologist Carol Balhetchet suggested using role models, such as celebrities, to deliver the abstinence message.
She added: "Families could help in spreading the right values but parents sometimes don't touch on the subject because it is awkward."
DSP Goh agreed and said all stakeholders, including the community, schools, parents, and media have an important role to play in educating youth against underage sex.
"Care should be taken by families to observe changes in the behaviour or activities of the young as most of the perpetrators in such cases are known to the victims," he added. - TODAY

Underaged teen infected with STD after unprotected sex

For a month, a full-time NSman and a young underaged teen had unprotected sex. Now the young girl is revealed to have contracted a sexually transmitted disease.
On Monday, full-time national servicemen, Eben Pua Kok Kiang, 20, admitted in the Community Court to having sex with a then 14-year old girl in late 2009, reported The Straits Times.
It was revealed that the girl went to a doctor on Dec 30, 2009, complaining of pain when urinating. Upon hearing about her multiple sexual encounters, the doctor arranged for her to undergo urine and pregnancy tests. But fearing that he would inform the police, the girl left the clinic without giving a urine sample.
Nineteen days later, she was sent to hospital for a medical examination and diagnosed with chlamydia trachomatis.
Pua pleaded guilty to two counts of sexually penetrating the girl in his Jurong home on Oct 25 and Nov 23 in 2009. Three other similar charges will be considered when he is sentenced on Feb 21, pending a probation report.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Agnes Chan said Pua met the girl on Oct 23, 2009 through a mutual friend. He communicated with her via text messages and asked her to be his girlfriend.
Two days later, she went to his flat and they had consensual sex. They had sex again at his home on Nov 23. The court was told that Pua had been experiencing pain when urinating since late 2008.
Showing up in court in the company of a young pregnant woman and two unidentified men, he told judge Roy Neighbour in mitigation that he was young and foolish at the time.
“Now I feel sorry. I hope I’ll get a chance to see my baby and take care of my family,” he added.
However, DPP Chan highlighted the aggravating factors in the case, saying that the NSman had shown a callous attitude by engaging in unprotected sex with a minor. She said that in all likelihood, the teenager had caught chlamydia from him.
DPP Chan also told the court that when the girl had expressed fears of getting pregnant, Pua had told her callously that she could have an abortion.
The penalty for each offence is a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine.

Trainee teacher jailed for underage sex offences

Yet another member of the teaching profession has been convicted of sexual offences.
Aaron Kok Chun Cheong, 23, a trainee teacher, pleaded guilty to two counts of sex with two underaged girls on Tuesday, according to a Channel NewsAsia report.
His lawyer, Amolat Singh, told a District Court Kok committed the offences between September 2007 and April 2008 when he was a full-time national serviceman.
He invited his first victim, a 13-year-old girl, to his flat in 2007 just one year after meeting on an Internet chatroom. The pair had sex and did not contact each other after that.
His crime was only discovered when the girl was warded in the National University Hospital (NUH) on July 15 in 2008, following complaints of stomach pains and vomiting. She was pregnant and told the police she had sex with several men. After her abortion on July 31, tests indicated Kok was not the foetus’ biological father.
Just a month before, another 15-year-old girl told the police she had consensual sex with Kok on three different occasions between April 20 and May 31, 2008. The first offence was committed at West Mall shopping centre in a handicapped persons toilet.
Kok pleaded for a lighter sentence, saying he was a first-time offender and did not intend to target his victims. Mr Amolat, who said Kok will be sacked from his position, added, “They initiated and actively sought to have sexual relations with him.”
Mr Amolat also revealed, Kok would need to pay roughly S$60,000 worth of liquidated damages for breaching his contract with the National Institute of Education (NIE).
Although Kok could have been jailed up to 10 years and fined, he was jailed 15 months for carnal connection.
Last week, disgraced MOE scholar, Jonathan Wong, was expelled from the University of York in the United Kingdom after pleading guilty to 17 charges of possessing child pornography videos.
Wong is sentenced to a six-month imprisonment sentence suspended for two years – which means he will not be jailed if he does not break the law during that period.
The York Crown Court also ordered for Wong to be listed on the sex offender registry for seven years after eight months’ supervision. He is also disqualified from working with children.

His crime was only discovered when the girl was warded in the National University Hospital (NUH) on July 15 in 2008, following complaints of stomach pains and vomiting. She was pregnant and told the police she had sex with several men. After her abortion on July 31, tests indicated Kok was not the foetus’ biological father.
Just a month before, another 15-year-old girl told the police she had consensual sex with Kok on three different occasions between April 20 and May 31, 2008. The first offence was committed at West Mall shopping centre in a handicapped persons toilet.
Kok pleaded for a lighter sentence, saying he was a first-time offender and did not intend to target his victims. Mr Amolat, who said Kok will be sacked from his position, added, “They initiated and actively sought to have sexual relations with him.”
Mr Amolat also revealed, Kok would need to pay roughly S$60,000 worth of liquidated damages for breaching his contract with the National Institute of Education (NIE).
Although Kok could have been jailed up to 10 years and fined, he was jailed 15 months for carnal connection.
Last week, disgraced MOE scholar, Jonathan Wong, was expelled from the University of York in the United Kingdom after pleading guilty to 17 charges of possessing child pornography videos.
Wong is sentenced to a six-month imprisonment sentence suspended for two years – which means he will not be jailed if he does not break the law during that period.
The York Crown Court also ordered for Wong to be listed on the sex offender registry for seven years after eight months’ supervision. He is also disqualified from working with children.

‘Sleeping girls’ molester in school nabbed

Police have arrested a 23-year-old student believed to be linked to a series of molest cases at a tertiary institution in Ang Mo Kio.
Dubbed the “sleeping girls” molester, the Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) student allegedly prowled the campus library, preying only on unsuspecting students who had fallen asleep at their study desks or corners, reported The Straits Times (ST).
He would allegedly approach them from the back and stroke their thighs, legs or backs, fleeing when the victims woke up.
Preliminary investigations revealed that he is believed to have molested at least four NYP students, with two incidents taking place last month.
Police arrested the suspect at his residence in Bukit Batok Street 31 on Wednesday.
Among the items seized from his home was stolen lingerie, which did not appear to belong to any of the women he is believed to have molested.
While it is not known whether the suspect is still attending classes, the school has arranged for the affected students to receive counselling.
“We are also in touch with them and their families to provide any further support and assistance,” said a spokesman from NYP, adding that it would be “inappropriate” to comment further as the case was still under investigation.
All 30 students that ST spoke to did not know about the arrest. Many were shocked to know that the molest incidents happened in public view in the school library, which they say is almost always full until it closes each weeknight at 9pm.
The library has two closed circuit television screens at the librarian’s lobby that broadcast footage of certain areas in both the lower and upper floors of the library.
But some say that they are not surprised.
“The resting corners and the café on the lower floor are safe because the concept is very open, but I can’t say the same for the upper floor.”
“It is so crowded, he could easily have committed the act and disappeared,” said first-year manufacturing engineering student Muhammad Shakil, 17.
Several parents of NYP students have also expressed worry over the incidents.
“The school needs to step up their security. As parents, we trust them to be responsible for the students when they are in school,” said Madam Cindy Teo, 47, whose daughter is a student in NYP.
If found guilty of outrage of modesty, the suspect could be jailed up to two years, fined and caned.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) has revoked the scholarship given to undergraduate Jonathan Wong, 23, after he was caught in possession of hardcore child pornography videos in his computer in March this year.
The Straits Times (ST) reported that the decision to evoke the scholarship comes after the student had “committed serious criminal offences, and pleaded guilty to the charges against him”.
Wong, a third-year history undergraduate in the University of York pleaded guilty last Tuesday to 17 charges of downloading child pornography videos between July 15, 2008 and March 19, 2009 featuring girls as young as 6-years-old.
The Ministry will also tighten its processes which require schools to provide information on specific “behavioural problems” of potential scholarship holders which may impinge on their selection as future teachers.
In the case of Wong who was awarded the Teaching Scholarship (Overseas) in 2006, MOE said it reviewed the required documents and testimonials written by teachers from his secondary school and junior college.
However, it was not mentioned in those documents that he had been publicly caned when he was a Secondary 3 student at Chinese High School, which is now part of Hwa Chong Institution (HCI), after he was caught peeping in a women’s toilet.
MOE said the teachers had excluded this incident from his testimonials “as they thought that he had overcome this errant behaviour after professional help”.
According to a HCI spokesman, after Wong was punished, “he received counseling and responded well to the professional help”.
He subsequently did well and did not behave inappropriately the following year or while in junior college. The spokesman added, “His teachers thus thought he had learnt from his mistake.”
Since his scholarship has been revoked, Wong will have to pay liquidated damages in accordance with his scholarship agreement. This amount includes tuition fees at the University of York range from £11,300 (S$23,500) to £14,850 a year for those enrolled this year, and living expenses.
Based on the current MOE guidelines, applicants for teaching scholarships have to submit their academic and co-curricular activity record, school testimonials, and a written statement giving insights into their character, abilities and suitability for teaching.
Applicants will also be screened for criminal records while those shortlisted will then undergo further evaluation including psychometric assessments and interviews.
After Wong was arrested, police discovered graphic images and videos, some of which had audio and lasted over an hour long, on his computer. About 50 videos were found in which 25 were rated in some of the highest categories of hardcore pornography.
Wong is currently out on bail but his sentencing is scheduled for Dec 13. Wong can be jailed for up to five years.
Principals and teachers shared mixed reviews on the Ministry’s decision to tighten its selection and screening process for teaching scholarship holders.
Victoria Junior College principal, Chan Poh Meng, told ST that when teachers write testimonials for students, they are making a judgment call.
“They have to decide what is important to include, so good or not-so-good behaviour should be included. That has always been the expectation,” he said.
But JC teachers who have written testimonials for students say that the issue is not so clear-cut.

3 more charged with Downtown East murder

SINGAPORE: Three more youths have been charged on Friday in court with the recent Downtown East murder.
They are Chong Rui Hong and Ng Wei Lun, both 18 years old and 20-year-old Jason Chew Wei Beng.
Together with at least seven other young men aged between 16 and 21 years old, it's believed the three were part of an unlawful assembly that attacked Darren Ng Wei Jie between 5.30pm and 6pm on October 30.
The 19-year-old Republic Polytechnic student, who was reportedly hacked with choppers, died in Changi General Hospital about five hours later.
The three young men who appeared in court earlier, looked nervous before the judge.
None of their friends and family members was present in the courtroom.
The three will be remanded at the Central Police Division and will be back in court next Friday.
Court papers also revealed the names of two other alleged accomplices.
They are 19-year-old Stillwell Ong Keat Pin and 18-year-old Ho Wei Quan.
MediaCorp understands that they haven't been charged yet.
Besides the three, five other youths have already been charged with the murder.
If convicted of the crime, the eight youths will face the death penalty.

Teen slashed in Ang Mo Kio
Police have arrested a 17-year-old boy who slashed a youth in Ang Mo Kio on Thursday.
According to The New Paper (TNP), two youths got into a loud dispute outside a 24-hour fast-food restaurant at Block 448, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10.
After shoving each other, one of them took out a knife and slashed the other on the right shoulder in front of shocked patrons.
The 17-year-old victim, who left a blood trail where the attack took place, was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
Madam Lim, 60, a newspaper vendor, told TNP, “I saw the victim getting into the ambulance. His arm, from his shoulder to his elbow was covered in blood.”
Residents said that two groups of youths were shouting at each other before the incident.
According to police, the victim and attacker are acquainted. The spokesman told TNP: “Preliminary investigations suggest the incident is not gang related.”
Some people Yahoo! Singapore spoke to were shocked when told about the latest slashing.
Said events manager Eric Tan, 36, “It sounds like slashing is becoming the norm for youngsters these days. Hopefully the police will come down hard on these teenagers.”
Salesman Tony Soo, 28, agreed. “Teenagers these days are badly behaved. For this incident to happen in broad daylight is a big concern. What are their parents doing? Can you imagine what would have happened if there were kids around the area when the slashing took place?”
The Ang Mo Kio slashing is the third incident after a teen was slashed to death at Downtown East and six people were involved in the Bukit Panjang clash.
